Source: Sumitomo Electric Carbide Inc.

Sumitomo’s AC9115T and AC9125T coated carbide grades feature optimized wear resistance and are well suited for turning titanium alloys. AC9115T is designed for general purpose machining and AC9125T for interrupted machining.

Titanium alloys are widely used in the aircraft industry due to their light weight, high strength and excellent corrosion resistance, Sumitomo says. Their applications are also increasing in the medical industry due to its high biocompatibility.

The AC9115T and AC9125T grades feature Sumitomo’s physical vapor deposition (PVD) Absotech coating technology as well as what is said to be the industry’s first tungsten carbide (WC) based composition, which suppresses chemical reactions with titanium alloys and increases wear resistance. According to Sumimoto, the results have shown up to 75% reduction in friction coefficient, which supports long tool life in turning of titanium alloys.

Fri, 11 Apr 2025 00:00:00 -0400 Walter Milling Cutters Provide High-Quality Surface Finishes Eastec 2025: The MP270, MP271 and MP470 milling tools are designed to reduce cutting forces and minimize machining vibrations due to their optimized geometries.
Source: Walter USA

Walter has extended the range of its Walter FMT standard polycrystalline diamond (PCD) milling cutter line with the addition of the MP270, MP271 and MP470 tools. FMT is the designation referring to Walter’s PCD subsidiary Frezite Metal Tooling, which specializes in high-performance tooling for aluminum.

The MP270 is a high-performance ramping cutter for pocketing, the MP271 a  shoulder/slot milling cutter and the MP470 is a ballnose end mill for finish profiling. All three cutters feature a solid carbide shank.

The cutting tools with brazed PCD cutting edges are designed for milling operations that require a high-quality surface finish. The cutters are said to be suitable for machining nonferrous metals, such as aluminum, aluminum-silicon alloys, magnesium and magnesium-based alloys, as well as plastics and fiber-reinforced plastics (ISO N and other non-ISO material groups).

They can be used with emulsion, oil and minimum quantity lubrication (MQL). The targeted areas of use are the automotive industry, aerospace industry and general mechanical engineering. The high service life for these PCD cutters is primarily the result of Walter’s wear-resistant WDN20 grade.

According to Walter, potential benefits of the MP270, MP271 and MP470 cutters include cost-effective, precise milling, reduced cutting forces and minimal vibration tendency due to optimized geometries, and low cutting tool material costs because tool life is 20 to 200 times longer than carbide tools. The PCD tools can be reconditioned and/or reconfigured.

Other tools in the Walter FMT PCD milling cutter range include the MP060 face milling cutter with diameters from 40-125 mm, the MP160/MP170 shoulder milling cutters with diameters from 16-40 mm, with three or four cutting teeth and the MP260/MP270 routing cutters available in diameters from 4-20 mm the MP170 with three or four cutting teeth. The MP160 and MP260 are cylindrical shank, while the MP170 and MP270 are screw fit adaptations.

Fri, 4 Apr 2025 00:00:00 -0400 HCL CAMWorks Software Features Machine-Aware Programming HCL CAMWorks is now integrated with 3DExperience Solidworks, facilitating data management and cross-discipline collaboration in the cloud.
Source: HCL Software

HCLSoftware announces the release of CAMWorks for 3DExperience Solidworks with the release of HCL CAMWorks 2025. HCL CAMWorks is now seamlessly integrated with 3DExperience Solidworks, facilitating data management and cross-discipline collaboration in the cloud. Cloud-connected technologies enable companies to collaborate and combine expertise during new product development from several disciplines, including engineering, design and manufacturing.

CAMWorks for 3DExperience Solidworks is fully compatible with the CAMWorks and Solidworks CAM data from the Solidworks desktop version, so companies have the flexibility to coordinate CNC part programming across multiple platforms and share data between the new CAMWorks for 3DExperience Solidworks and the desktop versions of Solidworks CAM and CAMWorks.

HCL CAMWorks 2025 also includes several additional enhancements, including machine-aware programming, which has been extended to include machine components, collision detection and an option to pause on collision. Machine-aware programming provides the ability for CAM programmers to create a CNC setup and program a part on a digital twin of the CNC machine. By including a digital twin of the CNC machine in the process, HCLSoftware says CAM programmers are provided with instant graphic awareness of the machine’s table size, travel limits, rotational limits and available tooling to ensure the viability of the planned machining process.

According to the company, machine-aware programming enables the CNC machine to become an interactive part of the CNC programming process, meaning CNC programmers can identify potential issues earlier in the programming process, increasing productivity and improving part quality.

Other enhancements in HCL CAMWorks 2025 include bar break chamfers, additional tool options for automatic deburring and the ability to specify collets as a workholding device for turn and mill-turn machines.

Wed, 2 Apr 2025 00:00:00 -0400 Wintriss Hardware Solution Boosts Effectiveness of Production Software Wintriss’ Tracker hardware solution for its ShopFloorConnect software is designed to simplify and maximize data collection, while minimizing operator involvement.
Source: Wintriss Controls Group

Wintriss Controls Group’s Tracker hardware solution for its ShopFloorConnect overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) and production tracking software is designed to simplify and maximize data collection, while minimizing operator involvement. For capturing and tracking process parameters, users can choose from several preprogrammed digital inputs such as run/idle and counting, and analog inputs including temperature, pressure, voltage and electrical current. Run/idle or count data is particularly well suited for metal forming and fabricating operations. Inputs are viewable in different formats, depending on operator preference.

The Tracker device automatically collects important data without requiring job information or a downtime reason to be manually entered by the operator. For example, a fabricator installed Trackers on four air compressors using the run/idle digital inputs to get a signal when each compressor is running, and an analog input connected to a pressure transducer to measure air pressure. The duty cycle and pressure information provided by the Trackers through ShopFloorConnect supply the user with the data needed for modifying air usage to balance the load on the four compressors.

“Based on customer feedback seeking a reimagined, easy-to-use hardware solution for tracking a range of inputs, we developed the new device to enable unique machine data to be automatically sent to ShopFloorConnect software, ” says Keith Magnant, general manager, Wintriss Controls Group. The Tracker is WiFi-enabled and pre-programmed to be easily integrated into existing and new ShopFloorConnect installations on virtually any type of machine, the company says.
