Source: Ceratizit USA

will showcase its AluLine – Micro milling cutters for precise, accurate cutting of miniature parts. AluLine – Micro is designed for applications with small workpieces that require high-tolerance machining. AluLine – Micro milling cutters feature a shrinkable 4-mm shank, cutting diameters from 0.2-3.0 mm, projection lengths from 3 × D to 15 × D, as well as a thin diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating.

AluLine – Micro milling cutters give high-precision machinists pinpoint accuracy with 3 µm at 0.2-mm diameter. The cutters’ 4-mm tool shank, compatible with shrink-fit toolholders, is said to provide optimal concentricity and the highest contour quality for small components. Ceratizit uses an ultra-fine grain substrate for the AluLine – Micro milling cutters, which is recommended for use in abrasive aluminum alloys.

To address the challenges of sticky chips and built-up edge formations associated with machining aluminum, AluLine – Micro milling cutters are designed with a specialized polishing grind for more homogeneous cutting edges that improve chip flow.

In addition, the DLC coating, combined with the tool’s geometry, makes it easier to remove sticky aluminum chips from the cutting zone. DLC coatings also increase the tool’s performance and extend tool life for effective machining of small, complex parts.

Wed, 5 Mar 2025 00:00:00 -0500 Star CNC Swiss-Type Lathe Features Twin-Thread Whirling Unit PMTS 2025: The SD-26 Type S employs a gate-shaped gang-style tool post including two B-axis stations, which are capable of programmable simultaneous five-axis control.
Source: Star CNC Machine Tool Corp.

presents its SD-26 Type S Swiss-type automatic lathe designed to machine complex components up to 1" diameter (26 mm). SD-26 Type S employs a gate-shaped gang-style tool post including two B-axis stations, which are capable of programmable simultaneous five-axis control. The first station features a dedicated four-spindle milling unit, supported from both top and bottom ends, providing rigidity during swivel machining. The cartridge-type second station offers a range of tool units, including what the company says is the industry’s first twin-thread whirling unit.

In addition, the SD-26 Type S offers a guide bush/non-guide bush switching capability to flexibly support diverse machining needs. The guide bush unit prevents deflection of material, enabling high accuracy machining of long and narrow parts, such as motor shafts. The non-guide bush mode enables machining of short parts, such as nuts, right out of the main chuck, reducing the material remnant length.

Furthermore, the machine has numerous features designed to offer enhanced workability and operability from both a hardware and software perspective. Reconfigured machine structure has improved the access to the guide bush and tool post area. A data input/output function simplifies the file loading process by combining the NC programs together with related information such as tool unit, geometry and wear offset data. Various support functions were also added, including a command help function to assist operators reading the program code.

SD-26 Type S Swiss-type machine benefits:

  • High-speed, high-precision large diameter machining up to 26 mm
  • High rigidity and accuracy
  • Deep-hole drilling capability with high pressure coolant
  • Guide bush/non-guide bush switching capability
  • Four-spindle milling unit with B-axis and simultaneous five-axis control
  • An additional cartridge type milling unit with B-axis control
  • Diverse machining options for back working station, such as cross drilling and slotting
  • Control system functions that improve productivity
  • Star CNC motion control.

Wed, 5 Mar 2025 00:00:00 -0500 Speedgrip Chuck Systems Provide Reliable Workholding Changeovers PMTS 2025: Speedgrip Chuck Co.’s NDS Quick-Change Mandrel, QCR Quick-Change Receiver and CSC Contactless Stroke Control systems are designed to streamline workholding changeovers.

QCR Quick-Change Receiver system.
Source: Speedgrip Chuck Co.

is showcasing its NDS Quick-Change Mandrel, QCR Quick-Change Receiver and CSC Contactless Stroke Control, all designed to make machine workholding changeovers faster and more reliable.

For versatility and efficiency, the NDS Quick-Change Mandrel uses a specialized rear bayonet mount that pulls and secures the workholding collet from behind, eliminating the need for draw screws. The no-draw-screw (NDS) configuration is said to improve workpiece accessibility to quickly and efficiently combine OD and ID turning, facing and grinding into one operation with minimal interference.

Speedgrip says its one-piece sealed collet design outperforms similar systems and does not break down with extended use under harsh machining coolants. The NDS Quick-Change Mandrel enables faster spindle speeds without loss of gripping power due to centrifugal force, while significantly extending durability and service life.

The NDS Quick-Change Mandrel is highly adjustable, with steering screws to compensate for total indicated runout and concentricity, providing repeatable accuracy to 0.0003". The unit is available in seven standard sizes ranging from 0.5"-5" for all standard spindle nose configurations and custom sizes are available upon request.

Speedgrip’s revolutionary QCR Quick-Change Receiver is a manually actuated cam-lock receiving plate that attaches to CNC lathe spindles and reduces the time needed to change workholding clamping devices. With the QCR Quick-Change Receiver, the time needed for operators to switch ID/OD collets, jaw chucks or face driver workholding devices on their machines is cut from an hour to five minutes, according to the company. Similar to tool retention in the spindle, the QCR has automatic release of the draw connections.

The QCR Quick-Change Receiver is available for all standard nose configurations, for spindle sizes that run from A2-5 through A11 and flatback spindles. For added versatility, the easy-to-use QCR Quick-Change Receiver also comes in a through-hole design for through-spindle bar feeding operations.

Rounding out Speedgrip’s new product lineup, the CSC Contactless Stroke Control eliminates the need to manually adjust proximity switches after each workholding clamp changeover and provides fast confirmation of part-clamping position. This smart manufacturing solution automatically displays digital measurement of the cylinder stroke while clamped on the workpiece and machine feedback, stroke position and real-time workpiece dimension data during operation and sends clamp confirmation signal to machine tool CNCs.

In addition to confirming part and stroke position, the control data aids in determining whether part parameters are in range prior to machining and helps prevent scrap and tool damage if workpiece clamping is not confirmed. The design can mount to most CNC workholding devices and can also retrofit to older machines.
