U.S. Union Tool has developed a diamond coating for its Unimax UDCBF and UDCLBF tungsten carbide end mills to improve hardness and durability for cutting cemented carbide. By using a deep cut into the cemented carbide, these coated tools create fan-shaped chips just like when cutting steel, the company says. The diamond coating is said to reduce cycle times by as much as 80 percent and machining costs by as much as 60 percent. Deep-pocket milling eliminates substrate damage to reduce polishing time and produce accurate, finished parts. UDCBF tools are available for Z-level, high-efficiency roughing; Z-level re-machining; and Z-level finishing at spindle speeds as fast as 30,000 rpm with a 300-mm/min. feed rate.
