Makino’s five-axis A500Z features a fully-integrated “Z-type” fifth axis to accommodate complex part geometry challenges in fewer workholding setups and machining operations. The machine’s kinematic arrangement minimizes the force path lengths both through the spindle and through the workpiece, efficiently transferring both cutting loads and reactive forces into the machine’s three-point leveled bed. System rigidity maximizes metal removal rates and perishable tool life.
The machine handles workpieces with diameters ranging to 24.8" (630 mm) and heights ranging to 19.9" (500 mm), with payload weights ranging to 880 lbs (400 kg). The X and Y strokes measure 28.7" and 29.5" (730 and 750 mm), respectively, with the Z stroke ranging from 19.7" to 27.6" (500 to 700 mm). The direct-drive rotary tables feature unlimited 360-degree movement on the B axis and 180-degree movement on the slant-style C axis. All axes have closed-loop active temperature control, extending component life. A 14,000-rpm, high-power spindle offers output capabilities of 49.6 hp (37 kW) peak power, and 223 foot-pounds (303 Nm) peak torque. Toolchanger magazine sizes range from a 60-tool capacity ring-type unit to a 313-tool matrix-type magazine. An automatic pallet changer enables workholding fixture tending on one pallet while the other pallet’s workpiece is being machined.Related Content
