Q-Plus Labs, a dimensional measurement laboratory, is co-developing a project with partner Starrett Kinemetric, a manufacturer of advanced metrology systems. The process coordinates a variety of part measurement protocols that require different sensors for proper measurement. Conventional methods used several different measurement instruments, the company says, but now these measurements can be performed automatically on a single multi-sensor measuring system with non-contact vision, touch probe and metrology-class lasers.
The company has integrated high-powered point cloud processing software with the multi-sensor system to facilitate the processing of high-resolution 3D data produced using the laser and other sensors. Once 3D data is obtained and recorded, the machine continues to perform measurements while the part advances to the next stage of production. Simultaneously, specialized point cloud software runs programmed virtual measurements on the data to produce a detailed 3D inspection report.
Data collected utilizing the new process can also be reverse engineered into a “smart” (dimension-driven) 3D CAD model. According to the company, the system can be used for nearly any kind of manufactured part.
