Available from Starrag, Bumotec SA’s S-191 Linear series of CNC turning/milling centers uses linear motors to ensure maximum precision and reliable repeat accuracy when processing gold, silver or platinum for producing parts such as watch components, medical implants and instruments. The machine series is suitable for turning, milling and other machining operations in a single setup on individual parts or from bar in diameters of 32, 50 and 65 mm. Linear technology eliminates backlash while providing repeatable precision ranging to 2.5 microns. The rapid linear drive achieves 1.1 G of acceleration and speeds of 50 m/min. A 1/100 micron-resolution Renishaw measurement system and a stabilized cooling circuit for all heat-generating elements also contribute to the machine’s precise performance, which it reaches within a few minutes after startup, according to the company. An integrated laser system checks the accuracy of the tools.
The versatile modular structure means that it is possible to configure a variety of machine “types” from standardized modules, including a machining center with seven axes and three spindles. The series also includes a “ceramics-safe” machine with a 150,000-rpm spindle on which it is possible not only to turn and mill ceramic parts but also to dry grind them, using grinding discs measuring between 0.5 and 80 mm.
