Sandvik has extended its CoroTurn HP range of turning toolholders to deliver high-pressure coolant at the point of cut when using negative inserts. The toolholders are said to increase cutting speed when roughing difficult materials and to increase tool life when roughing or finishing challenging workpieces.
Negative-style inserts can be used for machining difficult materials, such as heat-resistant super alloys (HRSAs), titanium and stainless steel, in aerospace, motorsport and medical applications. The extended range is designed to improve chip breaking, tool life and cutting data.
According to the company, delivering cutting fluid to the point of cut removes heat and improves machining performance. The technology also is said to eliminate the re-machining of chips by keeping the cutting zone free of removed material. This prevents component damage and permits scheduling unmanned operations, the company says. The technology is also useful for multitasking turn-mill centers, in which chips that gather around the tool can cause automatic tool change problems, the company says.
The current toolholder program includes 38 new toolholders in C5, C6 and C8 Coromant Capto coupling sizes, which are designed to accommodate negative inserts in C, S and D styles.
The CoroTurn HP coolant system, along with the accurate, quick-change Coromant Capto system, features high-pressure capability ranging to 80 bar in turning centers, vertical turning lathes and multitask machines.
