Versatile Lathe For Secondary Operations

Leaders-In background
The GT-10 lathe from Haas is designed for medium-sized shops that need a versatile machine for short-run, secondary applications. According to the company, the lathe’s footprint of 5' × 5.3' and maximum capacity of 10" × 8" makes it useful as a “chucker” for shops with limited space. The machine has a maximum part swing of 12.65" over the front apron and a 12.75" swing over the cross slide. The X axis provides 6" of travel with 2,400 lbs of thrust, while the Z axis provides 8" of travel with 3,700 lbs of thrust. The rapid traverse rate is 710 ipm in both axes. The lathe comes standard with a maximum spindle speed of 3,000 rpm. The company’s custom 7.5-hp vector dual-drive system provides peak torque of 42 foot-pounds. On-the-fly, wye-delta switching delivers higher torque and a wide constant-power band for constant surface-speed cuts, the company says. The A2-5 spindle nose has a 1.38" bore and accepts various optional through-hole chucks and collets, while the cross slide accepts gang-style tooling. In addition, the lathe features a large headstock casting for rigidity and an embedded tray for chip removal. For higher productivity, the lathe is available with a pneumatic 5C clamping system that includes a spindle nose, rotating union and drawtube. This increases spindle speed to 4,000 rpm. An eight-position, bolt-on style automatic tool turret can hold a combination of 0.75" OD or 1" ID tooling. Other options include a two-position, quick-change tool post for 0.75" OD tools, a high-volume coolant system, user-definable macros, a floppy drive and 16 MB of memory.
