Version 5.3 of Third Wave Systems’ AdvantEdge FEM computer aided engineering (CAE) software package is a materials-based solution for the optimization of metal machining. The software provides validated, detailed information about heat flow, temperatures, stresses, tool life and surface characteristics for machining processes.

A 2D tool mesh previewing feature eases simulation set up, and a cutter body import function improves chip formation and behavior analysis, the company says. A time-history tracking feature analyzes specific elements during simulation, and a steady-state analysis feature is included for 3D drilling simulations.

Other new and enhanced features include a turning toolpath import interface, DXF import capability enhancements for greater control over mesh, VRML/STL import interface enhancements, additional tool and workpiece display options and improved parallel performance.

The process-optimization software is suited for the aerospace, automotive and cutting tool industries. According to the company, benefits include increased material removal rates, improved tool life, predictable chip shape, shortened product design cycles, reduced trial-and-error testing and improved part quality through residual stress prediction.
