Capabilities introduced in Mastercam X5, the latest version of the company’s CAD/CAM software, include new techniques for dynamic milling, high speed roughing, multi-axis machining, smart hybrid finishing and more.
 
Hybrid finishing intelligently blends two cutting techniques in a single tool path. The resulting tool path evaluates the model shape and smoothly switches between constant Z and constant scallop machining. According to the company, this results in a finer finish with less work.
 
The new 3D surface high speed OptiRough tool path is designed to use dynamic milling motion to quickly remove large amounts of material. The tool path uses large, aggressive cuts followed by fast, smaller up-cuts to safely and quickly delivery fully roughed parts.
 
In addition to new techniques, the software’s multi-axis suite features a new workflow-oriented interface. This enables users to choose the basic type of work to perform using clear illustrations, then provides a clear, step-by-step process for defining how to cut the part. Also included is a new, highly specialized interface for smooth, gouge-free engine head porting.
 
New dynamic milling techniques include dynamic rest mill and dynamic contour. Dynamic milling constantly adjusts the tool path to ensure efficient cutting and to cut with the entire tool flute length, often eliminating the need for multiple depth cuts. Dynamic Rest Mill improves tool efficiency during cleanup routines, the company says, while Dynamic Contour uses an intelligent, high speed contouring strategy to remove material on walls. It supports multi-passes and can optionally include finishing passes.
