Artis Systems, a unit of Marposs, offers the Crashsensor ACS-3 three-axis acceleration sensor with datalogger. A single housing incorporates a multi-axis acceleration sensor, evaluation electronics and a micro controller. The system can be mounted directly on the machine or on the headstock for retrofit installations. Once activated, the system monitors acceleration to various limits. If a limit is exceeded, the datalogger writes this information to an alarm recorder with the date and time. The recorder can be read out via a serial interface.
 
The sensor is said to prevent secondary damage of expensive machine components and related downtime caused by programming-error collisions. It can also secure evidence of adequate use of machinery components, such as spindles and bearings, as well as clear identification and documentation of date, time and amplitude value. This information is helpful for discerning whether a collision has occurred, the company says.
 
The sensor can be programmed for three adjustable collision limits, and limit violations are summarized for load complexes in three areas. The stainless steel sensor housing can be sized to the machine builder’s specifications.
