SmartCAM V16.0 from SmartCAMcnc includes automated toolpath generation directly from a solid model, additional solid model translation and improvements in visualization, verification and usability. The product family consists of applications for CNC milling, turning, fabrication and wire EDM. Continuing the solids-machining theme found in the past four major releases, the software includes key improvements to both solid data handling and machining directly from a solid. Toolpath generation routines have been added for roughing and finishing prismatic pocket and profile features directly from the solid to the mid-level SmartCAM Advanced Milling and Advanced Turning products.

An integrated data translator allows both import and export of solid or wireframe models in the STEP format. Optional, fully integrated native-file format translators for Autodesk Inventor and SolidWorks are also available.

The toolpath generation capabilities are said to save time by eliminating many of steps required with previous versions. They also support full 3D tool offsetting, which allows fillets, corner rounds and drafted walls found on many prismatic parts to be machined directly from the solid feature. Users can accurately cut those features using standard flat, ball and bull end mills instead of custom form tools, the company says.

Ongoing improvements to the visualization/verification, user interface and usability areas include showpath tool motion verification, including persistent tool display and optional display of rapids; ShowCut material removal verification, including view change while paused and stock defined with voids; and user interface and usability improvements.
