Iscar offers a line of extra-strength, standard grooving tools designed to efficiently and securely machine T and L slots, which are common in turbomachinery. Applications include T grooves on turbine disks, rotors and casings made of superalloys.
 
The LPGIR insert provides a rigid platform with a choice of chipformers suited for either OD or ID work in long- or short-chipping materials. The cutting tip is thick and longer for stronger gripping, the company says. The rigidity improves finishes and enhances process security in high-added-value components. By minimizing the risk of tool fracture and by prolonging time in cut, the inserts permit unattended operation.
 
The advanced, ground chipformers are designed for reliable chip evacuation in grooving applications, the company says. They generate long segments and minimize re-cutting by directing chips out of tight grooves. The PR-type chipformer can be used in both right- and left-hand cuts, and the asymmetric T-type chipformer can be used in left-handed cuts only. Also available as standard is the P-type chipformer, which is designed for limited, less-challenging operations such as short-chipping metals. Additional chipformers are available on request.
 

Insert widths range from 2 to 5 mm (0.079" to 0.197"), and they can groove to depths of 6.5 mm (0.256").
