Makino’s a120nx is designed to machine oversized structural components for industrial equipment, diesel engines and semiconductor manufacturing. The machine features X-, Y- and Z-axis travels measuring 74.8", 63" and 66.9" (1,900, 1,600 and 1,700 mm), respectively. A standard large pallet size of 39.4" × 39.4" provides capacity for parts weighing up to 11,000 lbs. The automatic pallet changer switches from one pallet to the next in 38 sec. Capable of storing as many as 204 tools of various sizes and designs, the a120nx accommodates cutters as large as 35.4” long, 14.0" in diameter and as heavy as 77 lbs. Tools are loaded into the automatic tool changer (ATC) from an exterior loading station that features an ergonomic, easily accessible design to prevent operator fatigue.
At the foundation of the machine is a three-point supported bed casting to ensure all points are stable and contacting the floor. Robust, cross roller-style B-axis table bearings work in concert with a high-force rotary clamping system to ensure stable cutting throughout the workzone. Makino’s four-cone pallet location and clamping system delivers a secure 46,500 lbs of force on the pallet. The machine also includes a number of systems to manage the heat generated by rapid traverse rates of 2,126 ipm.
The standard 8,000-rpm spindle provides 50 hp continuous (74 peak), making the machine suitable for heavy roughing of iron castings and hard-metal applications. In addition, the spindle features significant improvements in acceleration and deceleration due to its high duty-rated performance characteristics that reduce rigid tapping times, the company says. Also available is an optional 18,000-rpm, high-power spindle for high metal removal rates machining light alloy structural components.
