Mikron Tool’s CrazyDrill Cool SST-Inox is able to drill small diameters and deep bores in stainless steels, nickel-based superalloys and CrCo alloys because of its internal coolant ducts, geometry and coating. Its range includes through-coolant drills in diameters measuring up to 6 mm and with working lengths up to 40×D.
A chipbreaking profile at the tip of the tool creates short chips, and an enlarged flute profile in the rear section provides constant cooling and chip evacuation. To drill deeper than 10×D, the drill’s flutes are finely polished to efficiently flush out chips. The drill also has spiralized cooling ducts leading up to the drill tip. A drop-shaped rather than round cross-section promotes higher coolant volume. This cooling performance prevents overheating and subsequent chipping of cutting edges and buildup of material, according to the company.
