Simultaneous Four- And Five-Axis Machining
SurfCAM Velocity 4 from Surfware has added numerous improvements to three-axis finishing, as well as four- and five-axis machining functions. The software’s three-axis high speed machining (HSM) strategies feature smooth and fluid tool paths that are said to improve surface finish while accommodating maximum cutting speeds to shorten the machining cycle. Updated machining strategies feature faster processing, multi-processor support, automatic arc filtering, optimized retracts and adaptive step down.

HSM operations include rest machining, steep/shallow, offset pencil and 3D offset.
Gouge-avoidance strategies allow users to specify as many as four separate check surface groups and individual gouge avoidance strategies can be applied to each successive group.
Lead-in and lead-out moves are said to accurately control the tool motion when approaching or leaving the machined part. Users can customize the retract motions to be closer to the part type and orientation, thus reducing cycle time and allowing safer tool repositions, the company says.
Enhancements have also been made to gap handling, surface edge control and swarf machining.
