According to manufacturer Emuge, Shur-Thread solid carbide thread mills are suited for medical manufacturers because they can produce threads for parts measuring less than 1". The cutters can be used on a range of soft and pre-hardened steels to 58 RC, as well as stainless steels, aluminum, cast iron, titanium, iconel and difficult-to-machine exotics. Typical medical applications include producing threads for titanium rods that add support while bones heal and creating molds for orthopedic replacement parts.

Featuring micro-grain carbide and TiCN coating for long life, the thread mills have multiple spiral flutes to reduce chatter. Additionally, large cutter diameter and high profile correction ensure true-to-gage threads, the company says. An extended milling portion enables a 2×D length of cut. To further enhance performance, the tools have an enlarged flute space for chip evacuation as well as an end-mill-type shank with a clamping flat for secure tool holding. The tools are available in 20 sizes and in two styles for various thread sizes.Ìý
