Built for a variety of drilling applications, Walter USA’s D3120 indexable-insert drill features square positive inserts with four cutting edges, reducing cost per edge. Available in five diameter sizes ranging from 0.63" to 1.654" (16 to 42 mm) and with lengths of 2×D, 3×D and 4×D, the drill is said to deliver process reliability with efficient chip removal. Two through-coolant channels and hardened and polished flutes and surfaces protect against friction and improve coolant flow. The D3120 is suitable for ISO material groups P (steels), M (stainless steels), K (cast irons), N (nonferrous) and S (super alloys).
The drill has one indexable insert shape for both outer and inner seats and a measuring collar for easy diameter identification. Torx Plus screws provide secure insert clamping and stability in all working conditions, the company says.
Walter says its Tiger-tec Silver grades increase the drill’s wear resistance because of its aluminum oxide layer with optimized microstructure. Grades available for the D3120 include:
- WKP25S and WKP35S for ISO steels, cast irons, and good or moderate machining conditions;
- WSP45S for steels, stainless steels, super alloys and difficult machining conditions;
- WK10 for aluminum; and
- WXP40 primarily for central inserts.
