Open Mind will present Maxx Machining, a set of high-performance strategies for roughing, finishing and drilling for the company’s HyperMill CAM software. This software covers 2.5D through five-axis milling, drilling, mill-turn and specialty applications.
The roughing strategies are based on the Volumill toolkit and have been applied to 2.5D pocketing, 3D roughing and five-axis roughing. The five-axis roughing is well-suited to engine casings and radial components such as in tire mold segments. The drilling strategies use five-axis helical motion to open pockets with standard end mills.
Maxx Machining finishing strategies are a highlight, applying conical barrel cutters to large surfaces (planar, ruled or general). The large radius on the barrel allows large step-over, while the conical surface enables short cutters to be used. Holders are protected by collision detection, the company says. The system also enables the user to control the contact point to increase cutter life or to help access specific regions of the workpiece.
