Leaders-In background

The company’s series of double-column, gantry-type VMCs is designed for machining heavy, oversized workpieces. The work area in the 104" × 200" model can mill a workpiece that measures 193" × 98" × 35" and weighs as much as 33,000 lbs. Available table sizes range from 80" × 125" to 130" × 240".   The double-column VMC is built with a rigid structure based on oversized columns; extra-wide box ways on a slanted Y-axis beam for equal force distribution; and close symmetrical design of the Z axis. The X axis runs on zero-backlash INA roller linear guideways. The spindle center line is designed for stability as a result of the slanted design of the bridge. A dual pneumatic counterbalance system on the Z axis supports the spindle head, providing the smooth movement required for 3D contouring.   The VMC delivers X, Y and Z rapid traverse rates of 394 × 394 × 471 ipm and a feed rate as fast as 276 ipm. Hollow ballscrews with temperature sensors allow coolant circulation and eliminate thermal buildup during extended cycles, the company says. The standard 50-taper spindle for all models offers 25-hp and 6,000 rpm. Other standard features include a two-speed gearbox for low-rpm machining, a chip flushing system, a spindle oil cooler, a fully enclosed splash guard, high-volume flood coolant, a programmable air blast and a coolant-through-spindle system. The random, bidirectional-access ATC offers 60 tool positions and 0.8-second tool-to-tool change time for tools that weigh as much as 44 lbs and measure as much as 13.75" in length and 8.45" in diameter.   A Fanuc 18iMB control is standard with AI Advance Preview Control, data server, manual guide Oi conversational programming, custom macro B, coordinate system rotation and front panel PCMCIA port for an optional memory card.
