EDM Series Redesigned For Speed, Accuracy
Fanuc has redesigned its iD series wire EDMs. Available from Methods EDM, the machines are designed to delivery high cutting speeds and accuracy as well as quality surface finish for the production of orthodontic braces, joint replacement components, surgical knives, needles, clamps and other medical instruments.

The machines feature thermally insulated cast Meehanite bases that are 40 percent more rigid than previous models, the company says. Table travels have been increased with no load overhang during table movement to provide rigidity for heavy workpieces. Measuring 1.26" (32 mm), ballscrews for the X and Y axes are double-anchored and encapsulated to prevent contamination. Ballscrews for the U and V axes measure 0.79" (20 mm) in diameter.Ìý

The EDM series’ 310iS-WA control features a Windows operating system, a 15.1" LCD touchscreen, split-screen graphics with increased drawing speed, interactive parts/maintenance assistance and file transfer via USB memory stick or Ethernet.

The machines, which use standard brass wire,Ìýalso include the custom auto wire feed system (AWF), which has been redesigned. The systemÌýis equipped withÌýan Air Jet wire transport system in the upper annealing pipe to improve accuracy, reliability and speed. In addition,Ìýa twin-servo wire-tensioning system reduces tension variations for increased part accuracy and quality, the company says. Precision 0.010" (0.25 mm) guides are standard, but the machines can also accommodate guides for wire measuring between 0.004" (0.1 mm)Ìýand 0.012" (0.3 mm). Guides for 0.002" (0.05 mm) wire are available as an option.
