The Schunk Prismo3 toolholder for tool grinding directly clamps shank diameters between 3 and 20 mm without the use of collet chucks or sleeves. The tool shank is automatically centered in the fixture during the clamping process. Regardless of the tool diameter, the X axis doesn’t change, meaning that the chuck jaws remain in the same axial position. This makes it possible to machine a range of drilling, reaming and milling tools in unattended operations without reprogramming the L1 measurement. According to the company, setup time with this toolholder can be reduced by as much as 70 percent compared to conventional multi-range grinding toolholders.
The design layout, the base sleeve and the robust construction give the toolholder high rigidity. Its sturdy jaw guides prevent the grinding discs from swinging up and almost completely eliminate tube imbalance, the company says. Rinsing with clean oil during grinding prevents dirt accumulation and helps to maintain high precision. In addition, the toolholder’s compact 125 × 125-mm dimensions leave space for tools, grinding and loading.
