The main criteria when machining aluminum wheels are the process itself and the time required to machine them. In an effort to reduce the machining time required to carry out this process, Tong-Tai developed the TVL-40-S4W, a four-axis VTL with one spindle and two turrets.

Constructed of solid cast iron construction, the machine weighs 34,000 lbs. According to the company, the boxway design is especially suited for producing aluminum wheels with diameter sizes ranging from 14" to 26". The machine is also suited for other turning applications of the same size range.

Other features designed for wheel production include a 75-hp main motor with an A2-11 nose and an optional finger chuck. The spindle accelerates as speeds as high as 2,000 rpm, and each of the two turrets has six stations. A coolant system, an enclosed splashguard, a hydraulic system and a Fanuc control are also among the machine’s standard features.
