The Niton XL3 800 series hand-held XRF analyzer is designed to provide fast alloy grade identification and composition analysis of metal alloys. According to the company, the typical time for positive grade identification is less than 2 seconds. Also available is the XL3t 900 series, which features light element capability that can directly measure the content of magnesium, aluminum, silicon, phosphorus and sulfur in metal alloys. Both models offer nondestructive, laboratory-quality chemical analysis of aluminum, titanium and nickel alloys, as well as superalloys, stainless steel and other metals, the company says. They incorporate 80-MHz, real-time digital signal processing and dual embedded processors for computation, data storage, communication and other functions. The analyzers can be equipped with a small-spot sample analysis feature, allowing users to switch between full area analysis for large samples and a 3-mm spot to analyze small sample areas. The models also offer a tilting, color touchscreen display for viewing sample results. In addition, the analyzers come with the Niton Data Transfer (NDT) software, a suite of data management utilities that allows users to produce certificates and reports as well as monitor or operate the instrument remotely from a PC or PDA.
