Optodyne’s single-aperture MCV-500 laser system is a complete laser calibration package for static calibration, compensation and dynamic measurement of CNC machine tools, CMMs, and large, five-axis machines. The laser head measures 2" × 2" × 8.5" and includes stabilization circuits, electro-optics and photo detectors. The output beam and the return beam are coaxial and share the same aperture so large, heavy optics are not required. The diameter of the retro-reflector is 0.5" or smaller. Only two elements need to be aligned. Also, the components can be mounted directly to the machine without using a tripod.
 
The laser calibration system can measure displacement at a high velocity with accuracy and sensitivity, the company says. By connecting the output to a Notebook PC with a special PCMCIA card (IPC4-1000), the displacement data can be collected at a rate of 10,000 data per sec., with a displacement resolution of 1 nm. Users can differentiate the displacement data once to obtain the velocity and twice to obtain the acceleration.
 

For static measurement, the laser calibration system automatically collects data after each stop. For dynamic measurement, a small, lightweight retro-reflector or small, flat mirror can be used as a target to reduce the influence of additional mass on the spindle. Dynamic performance, such as settling time, resonance frequency, velocity and acceleration, can all be determined.
