Smaller shank drills can also be inspected with the use of a spacer. Suitable for analyzing the quality of drills used in micro-manufacturing and micro-electronics applications, the system provides a single-purpose alternative to optical comparators and toolmakers’ microscopes.
A 30× magnification lens features a special reticle. Two-position viewing and 360-degree rotation of the drill in a precision collets holder enables complete inspection without refocusing or other adjustments. Features such as point centrality, hook, back taper and point angle can be inspected. Two different views in two different planes of the drill can be inspected without changing setup. View one inspects the side of the drill with all angles and most other adjustments, while view two inspects the end of the drill to capture width, thicknesses, flare and other factors. The two views are obtained by rotating the drill-holding fixture 90 degrees on its own axis. A travel rack and pinion brings the drill into focus. The inspection tool measures 9.5" × 1.5" × 2" and weighs 1 lbs 6 oz. It is equipped with two 4-mm-diameter Allen-head screws for mounting in a bracket holder.
