Leaders-In background

The L.S. Starrett Company’s large-format multi-sensor video measuring systems, which include the LF303, LF463, LF713, LF963 and LF1273 models, are available with vision, contact probe and laser scanning attachments. All feature travels from 12" to 50" along the X-Y plane and 8" along the Z plane. Capable of speeds in excess of 25" of travel per second and accuracy of more than 4 µm, the systems are designed to verify critical dimensions on complex, multi-featured parts.

Transports are driven by balanced linear motors that are close-looped to precision scales in all three axes and require no maintenance. The motors generate no heat and position to a small fraction of a micron, the company says. Other features include porous carbon air bearings for quiet, frictionless motion. The bearings require no lubrication or maintenance and provide repeatability greater than 3 µm. Moving axes are center-driven to reduce asymmetric thrust and eliminate the need for a separate slave scale. Also, all axes feature “tape scales” that are bonded directly to the machine’s granite structure. These scales feature quasi-absolute encoder markings to streamline the “homing” sequence.
