Dillon Manufacturing offers soft blank top jaws said to provide a smooth gripping surface, low TIR, and greater holding power with increased workpiece contact. According to the company, the smooth jaw surface leaves little to no marking on finished surfaces.
The soft jaw blanks are available in 1018 steel; 6061 aluminum; 4140, 8620 or A2 metals; brass; Delrin; or stainless steel. They can be custom bored, turned or shaped. A shoulder also can be machined to provide a locating stop for workpieces to gain close tolerance repeatability for length and depth. The jaws may be left soft or heat-treated if the material is steel, depending upon the application and quantities machined.
Designed to suit virtually any CNC or manual chuck application involving turned or bored parts, the jaws are suitable for second operation finishing work such as shafts, gear blanks, wheel hubs and bearings. They can be removed and reused later for the same operation or machined to grip a new workpieces until the blanks are consumed, making them well-suited for use in machine shops which routinely handle workpieces with different shapes and geometries, the company says.
