Cobra Carbide’s Viper variable helix end mill is designed to reduce the chatter caused by variations in chip thickness. The end mill increases material removal rates and provides high stability for materials commonly used in the aerospace industry, such as nickel, Inconel and its alloys, and stainless steel.
The cutting force and vibration level during chatter are large and can damage the workpiece. Variable helix/variable pitching can interrupt the tool vibrations to increase the stability of the operation, the company says. Cutting forces are increased when the helix angle is smaller and reduced when the angle is larger. Variable pitching decreases resonance at any particular cutting speed.
