Mazak’s Variaxis i-700 is designed to efficiently process long workpieces and those requiring precision-machined, complex curved surfaces in single setups. Suited for aerospace, automotive and marine components, the full, simultaneous five-axis vertical machining center incorporates all processes from raw material input through final machining. Said to reduce production lead times, improve accuracy and lower operating expenses, the VMC can handle applications ranging from heavy-duty cutting to high-speed cutting of aluminum and other nonferrous materials.
A 12,000-rpm, 30-hp, 40-taper spindle with a compact nose design provides a 23.62" (600-mm) Z-axis stroke. An optional 18,000-rpm spindle is also available. Travels measure 43.30" × 24.8" (1,100 × 630 mm) in the X and Y axes, respectively. Rapid traverse rates are 2,362 ipm (60 m/min.) in the X and Y axes, and 2,205 ipm (56 m/min.) in the Z axis. The machine accommodates workpieces ranging to 33.46" (850 mm) in diameter and 19.68" (500 mm) high. A roller-gear, cam-driven rotary/tilt table supported at both ends provides 30 degrees of rotation in the C axis and +30 through -120 degrees of tilt in the A axis.
The MX hybrid roller-guide system damps vibration and promotes long-term accuracy. A cam-driver toolchanger is available with a 30- to 120-tool magazine. The machining center also is equipped with Mazak’s Matrix 2 CNC control. A five-axis spline interpolation function included in the software provides smooth tool paths from long block-by-block programs, easy tool vector control, improved surface finishes and shorter cycle times, the company says.
