Through-Spindle Dust Collection For Composites And Graphite

This video shows a dust-collection system developed by Mori Seiki that draws dust-like chips up through the center of the tool, resulting in clearer air and a cleaner machining environment when the machine is used to mill or drill composite materials or graphite.
The system, called "Zerochip," consists of a high-pressure vacuum system that draws through the centerline of the spindle, as well as special hollow-center cutting tools and a special Zerochip toolholder that includes a bore through the center.
In milling tests using this system in carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), a 16-mm end mill with PCD edges milling at 2,000 mm/min. feed rate was able to capture 95 percent of the dust generated. This video shows a similar level of collection.
